KYPROGENIA

The ancient poet Sappho praised the Cyprogenian (Kyprogenia-born in Cyprus) Aphrodite

In 2005 Larkos Larkou founded the project "Kyprogenia", with an alternative approach to the musical tradition of Cyprus (Cyprus world fusion). The sounds of traditional music blend with elements of jazz and rock, through multidimensional arrangements, but also with the element of improvisation giving the freedom of expression to the outstanding musicians. The repertoire features references to "Rhymes of Love" (16th century poetry), the acritical song, the most famous dances, songs of common tradition of Greek Cypriots, Turkish Cypriots and Maronites, love songs, social songs, mocking songs and others. Larkos' compositions to poetry by Vasilis Michaelides and Dimitris Lipertis as well as his own lyrics hold an important place. The character of the work is twofold: local and international. He collaborated with important Cypriot musicians and with the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra (Orchestral Suite "Kyprogenia").

During its journey, "Kyprogenia" has represented Cyprus, supported by the Cyprus governement, to Serbia, Spain, Belgium, Luxembourg and Ireland and has been presented in local events, the most important of which are: University of Cyprus "Axiothea" festival, "Kypria 2006", 1st Cyprus-Russian Gala (Presidential Palace), arrangements for laouto and the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra, St. Charalambos-Kontea Church (organized by the American Embassy) and Othello Tower (bi-communal committee for culture).
